The European Commission has just published the results of the 2026 Erasmus+ Capacity Building for Higher Education (CBHE) call. Out of 57 proposals submitted involving Algerian institutions, three were selected for funding — bringing together eight Algerian universities working alongside partners from Europe, North Africa, and beyond. Together, this year’s CBHE selection mobilises around 1,640 higher education stakeholders from 113 countries, backed by a total budget of €113 million for 2026 alone (part of a €613 million envelope for the whole 2021-2027 period).
Here is a closer look at the three projects putting Algerian universities on the map this year.
T-REHEAL — Transforming Renewable Energy Higher Education in Algeria
Full title: Transforming Renewable Energy Higher Education in Algeria through EU-Aligned Curriculum Reform, Inclusive Capacity Building, and Applied Laboratory Modernisation
T-REHEAL tackles one of Algeria’s most strategic transitions — renewable energy — by reforming higher education curricula, strengthening staff capacity, and modernising laboratories so that Algerian universities can train the next generation of energy engineers to European standards.

SAHARA-Nexus — Water, Energy and Food for Saharan Regions
Full title: Strengthening Higher Education Capacities for Water–Energy–Food Nexus in Saharan Regions
SAHARA-Nexus addresses one of the defining challenges of arid and Saharan territories: how to manage water, energy, and food systems together in a sustainable way. The project builds cross-border teaching and research capacity across the Sahara-Sahel space, connecting universities from Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya with European expertise in environmental and agricultural engineering.

INESS — Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Solutions
Full title: INnovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Solutions
Coordinated by an Algerian university — a strong signal of trust in Algerian institutions’ project-management capacity — INESS focuses on building entrepreneurial ecosystems within universities, helping students and researchers turn ideas into sustainable ventures.
