On October 3-4, 2024, a HERE study visit took place at Ghent University and the Support Centre for Inclusive Higher Education (SIHO) in Ghent, Belgium, focusing on “Inclusive Internationalisation: From Good Intentions to Measurable Outcomes.” Algeria was represented by Prof. Athmane Bouzidi, a Higher Education Reform Expert (HERE), who participated in this gathering to explore effective practices for promoting inclusivity within higher education.
During the visit, attendees engaged with the institutional strategies employed by Ghent University and Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, both of which are dedicated to enhancing inclusive internationalisation. Through discussions with faculty, students, and key stakeholders, participants, including Prof. Bouzidi, gained valuable insights into the challenges and successes of implementing inclusive practices in international academic collaboration.
The role of SIHO was particularly noteworthy, as it serves as a vital resource for institutions aiming to improve accessibility and inclusivity in higher education. Participants learned about SIHO’s initiatives and how they support universities in developing policies and practices that cater to diverse student populations.
The visit also provided a broader perspective on how the Flanders higher education system is addressing the issue of inclusive internationalisation. Flanders has emerged as a leader in this area, promoting inclusivity both within its institutions and through collaborations across Europe and beyond. The outcomes of the InclusiveHigherEducation.eu project were highlighted as a key example of how public authorities and higher education institutions across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) are working to implement principles and guidelines aimed at enhancing social inclusion.
